Choosing between aluminum and uPVC windows is not a simple material ranking. The frame, thermal break or chamber design, reinforcement, glazing, spacer, seals, hardware, opening type, fabrication, installation, and building-envelope requirements all work together.
For Saudi projects, compare the complete window's required U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), air and water performance, structural resistance, corrosion exposure, hardware, and conformity route. A good frame with the wrong glass—or good glass in a poorly fabricated frame—can still miss the project target.
Aluminum Window Systems
Aluminum profiles offer high stiffness and can support slim sightlines and large openings when the system is engineered for the required wind load and glazing weight. Alloy, temper, profile geometry, wall thickness, reinforcement, joint design, and finish should follow the approved system rather than a generic assumption that every window uses the same 6063 temper.
Aluminum is highly thermally conductive. In conditioned spaces, a thermally broken system can materially reduce frame heat transfer by separating inner and outer aluminum sections with a lower-conductivity barrier. The project should compare certified whole-window or frame performance for the exact system, not just the phrase “thermal break.”
uPVC Window Systems
uPVC has much lower thermal conductivity than aluminum and is commonly formed as multi-chamber profiles. Many systems use steel or other reinforcement depending on size, wind load, hardware, color, and manufacturer design. Chamber count alone does not prove performance; profile geometry, reinforcement, seals, fabrication, and tested window data matter.
For Saudi exposure, verify the profile manufacturer's documented resistance to UV and high-temperature service, color stability, allowable sizes, reinforcement schedule, and warranty conditions. Avoid a blanket claim that every uPVC product will warp or that every premium profile is suitable for every large opening.
Thermal Performance: Use the Whole Window
The correct energy comparison is the complete fenestration assembly. Frame conductance, glass layers and coatings, spacer, gas fill, edge-of-glass effects, frame fraction, air leakage, and installation all influence performance.
Saudi energy-code requirements depend on the applicable SBC 601 or SBC 602 provisions, building type, climate requirements, orientation and design. Use the whole-window U-factor and SHGC required by the project. Do not apply one universal SHGC such as 0.25 to every window in every Saudi building.
Glazing Options
Single Glazing
Single glazing has limited thermal resistance compared with insulated glazing. Whether it is acceptable depends on the applicable energy and project requirements. Do not assume it is automatically compliant for an exterior conditioned space simply because it appears in a low-cost quotation.
Insulating Glass Units (IGUs)
An IGU uses two or more panes separated by a sealed cavity. Gap width, spacer, gas fill, pane thickness, coatings, edge seal, and glass treatment change both thermal and structural performance. Specify the required U-factor, SHGC, visible-light transmission, safety glass, acoustic performance, and heat-treatment or tempering requirements rather than a generic “double glass” description.
Low-E and Solar-Control Glass
Low-emissivity and solar-control coatings can reduce long-wave heat transfer or solar heat gain depending on coating design. The correct coating is selected from the project's U-factor, SHGC, visible-light, appearance, orientation, and daylight requirements. A lower SHGC is not automatically better if it conflicts with daylight or architectural goals.
Durability, Corrosion, and Finish
For aluminum, verify the powder-coating or anodizing specification, pretreatment, coating system, color, and suitability for the project's corrosion environment. Coastal exposure can demand greater attention to finish, hardware, fasteners, drainage, sealants, and dissimilar-metal contact.
For uPVC, verify the compound and profile system's documented weathering performance, reinforcement, dark-color limitations where relevant, seals, and hardware. Do not publish a universal 20-year lifespan or standard warranty period; service life depends on product, exposure, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and manufacturer warranty terms.
Saudi Regulation and Saber
