Electrical Materials for Saudi Projects: Cables, LV Assemblies, Switchgear, and What to Specify
A practical guide to cables, circuit-integrity requirements, LV assemblies, MCCs and MV switchgear for Saudi projects, with current IEC and Saudi conformity checks.
Electrical procurement becomes risky when a line item names only a cable size or a panel type. The same nominal product can differ in conductor construction, insulation system, voltage rating, fault performance, enclosure, verification evidence and compatibility with the approved design.
The right starting point is the electrical schedule and single-line diagram. Procurement should preserve the engineer’s ratings and standards, then make supplier differences visible instead of turning them into hidden substitutions.
Cable selection is an engineering calculation
For LV power cables, conductor material and cross-section are only part of the specification. Cable sizing also depends on design current, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand, installation method, grouping, ambient and soil conditions, thermal insulation, conductor temperature rating and the applicable design standard.
Insulation and sheath systems such as PVC, XLPE or low-smoke halogen-free constructions are selected from the installation and fire strategy. Do not assume one construction is the universal Saudi default. Use the exact cable designation and standard in the approved design.
Armoring and mechanical protection
Armoring can provide mechanical protection for buried, exposed or industrial routes, but the required armor material and construction depend on the cable and installation. Single-core AC cables need particular attention to metallic armor and induced-current effects; do not specify steel armor generically without the cable designer’s requirement.
Circuit integrity is different from flame spread
IEC 60331 tests circuit integrity of cables under specified fire conditions. Flame-propagation, smoke and halogen characteristics are separate properties covered by other tests. Life-safety circuits should use the cable performance required by the fire strategy and circuit function rather than a generic label such as “fire-rated cable.”
Plugs and socket outlets in Saudi Arabia
Saudi requirements use the 13 A square-pin plug and socket family based on GSO/BS 1363. An older SASO 2203 reference has been superseded, so buyers should verify the current applicable SASO/GSO standard and the Saudi Quality Mark or other conformity evidence required for the exact accessory rather than copying an outdated standard number into the BOQ.
LV distribution boards and switchgear assemblies
IEC 61439-1 provides the general rules for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies and is used together with the applicable product part, such as IEC 61439-2 for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies. Current 61439 verification is not the old “TTA/PTTA” type-tested versus partially type-tested terminology sometimes still found in legacy specifications.
For an LV assembly, define rated voltage, rated current, prospective short-circuit level, incoming/outgoing devices, busbar system, form of separation if required, enclosure, ambient/service conditions, IP rating from actual exposure, metering and communications, and the required design/routine verification evidence.
MCCs, MV switchgear and RMUs
Motor control centers combine motor feeders, starters or drives, protection and controls. The motor schedule, starting method, duty, control architecture, fault level and maintainability requirements determine the configuration; draw-out construction is an option, not a universal MCC feature.
MV switchgear and ring main units must match the project voltage, insulation level, normal current, short-circuit rating, protection scheme, internal-arc requirements where specified, cable interfaces and local utility or project standards. Utility-connected packages should be coordinated with the responsible network operator before procurement is frozen.
What to specify before asking for prices
For cables, state the complete cable designation, conductor, size, cores, voltage, insulation/sheath, armor where applicable, fire performance, standard, installation basis and quantity. For panels, state all electrical ratings, devices, enclosure/service conditions, IEC verification, utility requirements, drawings, testing, spare capacity and documentation.
Saudi conformity requirements vary by product category. Verify the current technical regulation, Quality Mark or other required conformity route for the exact product instead of treating a generic “SASO compliant” sentence as sufficient evidence.

FAQs
Does IEC 61439 mean a panel is simply “type tested”?
Current IEC 61439 uses a verification framework for assemblies. Specify IEC 61439-1 together with the relevant product part and request the required design and routine verification evidence.
Is IP65 the minimum for every outdoor Saudi panel?
No. Choose enclosure protection from the actual dust, water, cleaning and installation exposure plus the project or utility specification. A higher IP number is not a substitute for correct thermal design or installation.
Is a fire-retardant cable the same as a circuit-integrity cable?
No. Flame-spread behavior and the ability to keep a circuit operating during a specified fire test are different performance questions. State the required test and circuit function explicitly.
