Gypsum Board Types for Saudi Projects: Standard, Moisture-Resistant, and Fire-Rated

A practical guide to standard, moisture-resistant and fire-rated gypsum board for Saudi projects, including wet-area limits, tested fire assemblies, thickness selection and standards to verify.

Gypsum board is used across Saudi residential, commercial, hospitality, and service spaces, but the phrase “gypsum board” is not a complete specification. Regular board, water-resistant board, Type X and other fire-resistance products, shaft-liner products, and impact or acoustic boards are designed for different conditions.

The useful question is not which color board to buy. It is which product category and complete wall or ceiling system matches the project's moisture, fire, acoustic, impact, framing, and finish requirements.

What Gypsum Board Is

Gypsum board—also called drywall or plasterboard—uses a gypsum core with facings engineered for the intended product. Core formulation, facing, thickness, density, edge profile, and additives vary by product type and manufacturer.

ASTM C1396/C1396M is a major reference for gypsum-board product categories and properties. SASO also adopts Saudi standards for gypsum-board products and application. The project specification should identify the exact standard and edition required rather than use “ASTM compliant” or “SASO compliant” as a vague description.

Regular Gypsum Board

Regular board is intended for dry interior conditions where enhanced moisture or fire performance is not required. It is commonly used in non-rated partitions and ceilings, subject to the selected board's span, framing, and installation limits.

Market thicknesses often include values around 9.5 mm, 12.5 mm, and 15 mm, but thickness alone does not define the application. A ceiling, impact wall, acoustic partition, or multi-layer system can require different products and framing even at the same nominal thickness.

Water-Resistant and Moisture-Resistant Board

Water-resistant gypsum board is manufactured to resist moisture better than regular board, but it is not waterproof. Board color varies by manufacturer, so “green board” or “blue board” should never replace the formal product classification and data sheet in the specification.

Typical uses can include bathrooms outside continuously wet zones, kitchens, laundry rooms, service spaces, and other interiors where the design anticipates elevated humidity or intermittent moisture. Selection should follow the actual exposure, ventilation, condensation risk, and approved wall build-up—not the city name or room label alone.

Can MR Board Go Behind Shower Tiles?

Do not assume so. Gypsum Association guidance makes the key distinction: water-resistant gypsum backing board is not waterproof. In direct-wet zones, use a substrate, waterproofing membrane, joint treatment, and tile-adhesive system that the project specification and system manufacturer explicitly approve for that exposure.

If the project requires a numerical water-absorption limit or another moisture-performance value, take it from the governing product standard or approved specification. Do not apply one generic percentage to every product sold as MR board.

Fire-Resistance Gypsum Board and Type X

Type X and other fire-resistance gypsum products are formulated to maintain core integrity for longer under defined fire-test conditions. The critical point is that a fire-resistance rating belongs to the complete tested or listed assembly, not to the gypsum board by itself.

Stud material and spacing, board thickness and number of layers, fasteners, joint treatment, insulation, penetrations, openings, and other details can all affect the rated system. A 15.9 mm (5/8 in.) Type X board appears in many fire-rated assemblies, but that thickness alone does not guarantee a one-hour or two-hour rating.

For stair enclosures, exit corridors, shafts, service rooms, separation walls, or other rated construction, start from the approved fire strategy and required rating. Then use the exact tested or listed assembly accepted for the project under the applicable Saudi fire requirements. ASTM E119 is one recognized fire-test method where the project accepts it.

Specialty Boards Worth Knowing

Impact-Resistant Board

Impact-resistant products use denser or reinforced constructions for walls exposed to carts, equipment, or heavy traffic. Hospitals, schools, corridors, and retail back-of-house areas are examples where the project may require tested impact performance.

Acoustic Board

Higher-density or specialty gypsum boards can contribute to an acoustic wall, but STC or Rw performance belongs to the full assembly. Studs, insulation, resilient channels, board layers, joints, and flanking paths can matter as much as the board itself.

Shaft-Liner Board

Shaft-liner products are thicker, system-specific boards used in shaft-wall and service-riser assemblies. Products around 25 mm are common, but the thickness, framing, layers, and installation sequence must follow the tested proprietary or generic shaft-wall system.

What to Specify for Gypsum Board

A useful gypsum-board line item should identify enough of the product and assembly to prevent lower-performance substitutions. Depending on the application, include:

  • Board category: regular, water-resistant, Type X/fire-resistance, shaft liner, impact-resistant, acoustic, or another specified type.
  • Thickness, dimensions, and edge profile.
  • Applicable product and installation standard, including ASTM C1396 or the applicable Saudi-adopted/project standard.
  • For fire-rated work: required fire-resistance rating and exact tested or listed assembly reference.
  • For water-resistant work: declared moisture classification and the approved wet-area or waterproofing build-up where applicable.
  • Quantity and project zone so different board types are not mixed under one generic line item.

How to Compare Supplier Offers

Check that every offer matches the same board category, thickness, standard, dimensions, quantity, and system requirements. For rated work, the product submittal should be traceable to the specified assembly; a standalone data sheet saying “fire-rated” is not enough.

Is moisture-resistant gypsum board waterproof?

No. It is designed for improved moisture resistance, but direct-wet zones need an approved substrate and waterproofing system suitable for that exposure.

Does Type X board alone provide a one-hour fire rating?

No. The rating belongs to the tested wall or ceiling assembly. Board type, layers, framing, fasteners, insulation, joints, and penetrations must match the approved system.

Which thickness should I buy?

Use the thickness required by the selected wall or ceiling system. Common market sizes do not replace framing-span, fire, acoustic, impact, or manufacturer requirements.

What should I ask the supplier to provide?

Request the exact product data sheet, board classification and standard, thickness and dimensions, intended-use limitations, and the test or listing evidence required by the project. For rated construction, verify the complete assembly reference.

The right gypsum board is the one that matches the actual exposure and the complete system. Define the board category, thickness, standard, and rated assembly where needed before comparing price or brand.
