IP Ratings for Lighting Fixtures in Saudi Projects: What the Numbers Mean and What to Specify
A practical guide to IP ratings for lighting fixtures in Saudi projects: how IEC 60529 works, how to match protection to the actual environment, and what conformity documents to request.
An IP rating tells you how an enclosure is protected against access, solid objects and water. For a lighting buyer, it is useful only when the rating is matched to the real installation conditions. A higher number is not automatically a better specification.
The practical question is what the fixture will actually face: dust, splashing, rain, cleaning jets, pooling water or immersion. Once that exposure is clear, the IP requirement becomes much easier to define.
How the IP code works
IEC 60529 defines the IP Code. The first numeral describes protection against access to hazardous parts and solid foreign objects. The second numeral describes protection against water. The digits should be read separately.
Common examples are IP20 for protection against finger-sized access with no stated water protection; IP44 for objects larger than 1 mm plus splashing water; IP54 for dust protection plus splashing water; IP65 for dust-tight construction plus water jets; IP67 for dust-tight construction plus temporary immersion under the standard test conditions; and IP68 for continuous immersion under product-specific declared conditions.
These descriptions explain the code; they do not assign a fixture to a room or project by themselves. Location, cleaning method, drainage, temperature, corrosion exposure and installation details still matter.
Select the rating from the exposure, not from a generic room label
Dry interiors
In a dry, climate-controlled interior, water protection may not be necessary. That does not make IP20 a universal rule for offices, homes or corridors; it means the requirement can be lower when the environment presents no water or significant dust exposure.
Bathrooms and shower areas
Avoid blanket rules such as all bathroom lights must be IP44 or all shower lights must be IP65. Bath and shower installations are divided by location and electrical zones, and the required protection depends on where the luminaire is installed. IEC 60364-7-701 is a key reference. Follow the approved electrical design and the applicable project code.
Outdoor and semi-outdoor lighting
Saudi outdoor installations can face fine dust, rain, irrigation spray and wash-down cleaning, but exposure varies widely. A sheltered soffit, an exposed façade fitting and a landscape bollard do not automatically need the same rating. Specify protection that matches the location and maintenance method instead of treating IP65 as a universal outdoor minimum.
In-ground, pool and water-feature fixtures
Where pooling or immersion is credible, use a product specifically designed and tested for that condition. An IP67 or IP68 marking is important, but it is not the whole installation: drainage, cable entries, junction boxes, seals and manufacturer limits must preserve the enclosure protection in service.
Saudi conformity is separate from the IP rating
An IP rating is an enclosure-protection classification under IEC 60529. It does not, by itself, prove that a luminaire satisfies Saudi product-conformity requirements. SASO’s current IECEE information lists lighting products within its national recognition scheme and cites the IEC 60598 luminaire family among the relevant standards.
For procurement, verify the conformity route that applies to the exact product, model and use case. Ask for the documents required by the project and current Saudi regulations rather than accepting an IP marking as a substitute for product safety or conformity evidence.
What to specify before requesting a quote
State the required IP rating and the exposure it addresses; request product documentation or test evidence referencing IEC 60529; identify the applicable luminaire safety and Saudi conformity documents; state ambient-temperature and mounting limits; and define housing, corrosion protection, glands, connectors and accessories needed to preserve the rating after installation.

Is IP65 automatically better than IP44?
It provides a higher degree of dust and water protection, but that does not make it the right choice everywhere. Select the rating required by the environment and approved design.
Does IP68 mean every product can be submerged at any depth?
No. IP68 conditions are product-specific beyond the standard framework. Confirm the manufacturer’s stated immersion conditions and installation instructions.
Does an IP rating prove Saudi conformity?
No. IP classification and Saudi product conformity address different questions. Verify both enclosure protection and the applicable SASO/IECEE documentation.
